The more calories per gram, the higher the risk of cancer

The energy density of food describes the ratio of calories per gram. The more calories a gram of the food has, the higher its so-called energy density. Processed foods such as pizza , hamburgers and other pastry products have high values. However, fresh foods – such as fruits, vegetables and legumes – have a low energy density.

The researchers suspect the reason for the changes in the metabolism that produce energy-deficient foods , regardless of the weight of the consumer. The experts suspect that about 30 percent of all cancer can be avoided by a diet change.

 

Energy-rich foods change the metabolism

For the study, the researchers have analyzed data from around 90,000 postmenopausal women . The study was recently published in the journal Journal of the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics .
